Swedish Fiddle music has deep cultural roots and is a part of the American Pioneer Experience. When people immigrated from Sweden to Minnesota, the Fiddle came too! As well as a rich heritage of delightful dancing music! Traditionally it was played in farmhouse kitchens, at barn dances and out on the green.

Q: “You’ve been involved in playing music for folk dancers – can you tell us more about that?”
A: “In 1999 I started playing fiddle accompaniment for the Ki-Chi Saga Swedish Jr. Folk Dancers, a group my sister Karlynna performed in for 10 years. Then in 2004 we went on to form the North Star Jr. Folk Dance Group to help carry on traditions of cultures in our region… Currently, we teach fun traditional community folk dances.”

Q: “Is Swedish fiddle music an aural tradition?”
A: “Yes, and in keeping with that tradition, our repertoire of music has been and continues to be learned from MN Swedish Fiddlers and from Fiddlers from Sweden who visit the US. For those who are interested in learning to play Swedish Fiddle Music, I hold lessons in North Branch and Cambridge, Minnesota as well as offer workshops & camps.” |
Q: “What is the history behind the music that you play?”
A: “Swedish Fiddle Music often inspires toe tapping and of course dancing as that is why many of the tunes were composed. The rhythmic pattern of a tune, just naturally makes your feet want to dance in a certain way – for instance, the ‘Gånglåt’ is a walking tune, the ‘Vals’ is a waltz rhythm, the ‘Schottis’ has a livelier tempo and so forth!” |
